The Relic at Weingarten

The portion of the relic presented as a gift from the people of Mantua is now conserved in the Benedictine Basilica in Weingarten, an attractive town in the Wurtemberg region in Germany.

On the first Friday after the Feast of Ascension it is carried in a somewhat peculiar procession attended by the church and civil authorities of the town and the surrounding parishes. In the centuries old festival the people, including the clergy and scores of musicians ride horseback dressed in traditional costume.

Today about 3,000 horses are used in the procession; in the past that figure could reach 7,000.
