Popes, Kings and Emperors

In the following centuries there was a continuous passage of Popes, kings and emperors all wishing to pay homage to the holy relic. A visit to the City of the Gonzagas was considered obligatory for the rich and powerful passing through the region.

In 1402 the 4th Captain of Mantua, Francesco Gonzaga presented Giovanni Maria Visconti with a portion of the relic.

Half a century earlier, in 1354, the Emperor had succeeded in obtaining an arm from the remains of Longino held in the Basilica in Mantua. It can be said that all the Popes and Emperors of the period revered the Holy Relic of the Blood of Christ.
